    The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce will be recognizing a few influential community members this year.

    Meet Chief Manuel Hernandez! 

    Manuel “Chief” Hernandez grew up on the Barona Indian Reservation in East San Diego County. He attended Lindo Park, Tierra Del Sol and El Capitan High School, After graduation, he enlisted in the Army as an Infantry soldier before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation, he was commissioned as an US Army pilot. Chief’s military career as an aviator, flying UH-60 Blackhawks, took him to South Korea, Guatemala, Egypt, and through Operation Enduring Freedom. After 24 years of service, he retired and returned to Barona, where he now lives close to family.

    He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from West Point and an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University. He has a son, Dakota Hernandez and a daughter, 2LT Jenna Hernandez, US Marine Corps.

    Laurie Egan-Hedley

    Laurie is the Director and Curator for the Barona Cultural Center & Museum and current Chair on the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce Board. She is an active participant in our Chamber events and is always willing to donate her time for the betterment of the Lakeside community! We are so blessed to have her passion, energy and spirit within the Chamber! 

  • 2025 Citizen of the Year 2025 Citizen of the Year

    Sam Walker

    Sam has a long family history in Lakeside, he was raised on the Walker Dairy & Farm and has been instrumental in developing Lakesides youth as the El Capitan's High School Agricultural teacher from 1984-retiring in 2009. He continued to support the FFA program by securing two privately funded state-of-the-art classrooms for the El Capitan FFA, providing hands on experience in agricultural processing and business skills. Sam was instrumental in acquiring the permit for the ticket office, he spearheaded the development of the community's marquee and played a pivotal role in preserving that the Lakeside Rodeo continued when it faced potential shutdown. Even now in retirement, Sam's dedication to the Lakeside community remains unwavering. As a dedicated member of the El Capitan Stadium Association, he continues to champion initiatives and benefit Lakeside's youth and community. We are so proud to name Mr. Sam Walker our 2025 Citizen of the Year.

    Steve Mull

    Steve Mull (now retired) has graciously served the Lakeside Union School District for 34 years, 20 of those as the principal at Lakeside Middle School. He has worked with the San Diego County Office of Education on science initiatives and chaired the County Science Olympiad for many years. Steve has contributed to student success by helping to bring a language immersion program, Project Lead the Way and performing arts programs to the Lakeside Union School District. In addition, Steve, along with his brother Cliff founded P.L.A.Y (Performing Lakeside Acting Youth) in 2000 which served as a district-wide afterschool and summer drama program that empowered students to take on the roles of actors, directors and crew, fostering comprehensive theatrical experiences for over 2 decades. We cannot thank Mr. Steve Mull enough for all that he has done for Lakeside's youth and community.
